Planning your move

When you’re busy dealing with surveyors, mortgages and all the other admin, the thought of packing and moving all your furniture, books, clothes and other possessions can seem daunting. To make the task more manageable, we’ve put together this handy checklist to help you get it sorted.

Make moving easier with MORE! Self Storage.

When your house goes on the market

8
  • Have a good declutter to help the estate agent take great photos
  • Sell anything you no longer want or donate it to a charity shop
  • Save old sheets or blankets; they’ll come in handy to protect furniture
  • Write a list of everything you’re keeping
  • Divide things into those you still need and those you could pack and store
  • Reserve a self storage unit (we can help you find the right room size)
  • Buy boxes, bubble wrap, tape and marker pens to label the boxes
  • Pack up the things you won’t need for now and take them to your storage unit

When it’s time to move

6
  • Book a removal company or hire a van if you’re doing it yourself
  • If hiring, check your driving licence to see which size van you’re allowed to drive
  • Ahead of the day, pack up your remaining things
  • On the day, start early – moving always takes longer than expected
  • Call in at your storage unit to collect anything you need (we’re open 7 days a week)
  • Unload in your new house, prioritising the most important things (kettle, tea bags)

After the move

3
  • Take your time to unpack – a rolling 28-day contract makes it easy to keep your storage for as long as you need
  • Need to renovate your new house? Or maybe you’re renting somewhere smaller? Keep non-essential things safely out of the way in your storage unit
  • No longer need as much space? You can downsize your storage unit (it’s easy to switch sizes)

How to pack like a pro

There’s an art to packing for moving house and placing things in storage. A range of box sizes will give you plenty of flexibility. Small boxes are great for heavy items like books – your back won’t thank you for trying to carry too many at once. Larger boxes are perfect for awkward objects like TVs or food processors. Pack bedding or clothing around delicate items for protection. Just don’t forget to write the contents on the outside of the box so you can track things down easily later.

What about things that won’t fit into boxes?

If furniture such as tables and bookcases comes apart, dismantling it will make it easier to handle and will save space. Old sheets or blankets will offer protection. There aren’t too many ways to pack something like a fridge freezer. It’s important to check it’s empty, though (nobody likes rotting fish fingers) and a bit of tape can help ensure doors don’t swing open. For washing machine and dryers, remember to fit the travelling bolts to prevent damage when moving.

  • Use small boxes for books

  • Use larger boxes for TVs or food processors

  • Use bedding or clothing to protect delicate items

  • Mark the box with the room and it’s content for easier sorting

Making the most of self-storage

To make the most of your self storage, you need it to be easy to access, safe and secure. This is exactly what you get at MORE! Our stores are easily accessible from the local area. And when you arrive, there’s plenty of room outside to manoeuvre a vehicle as big as a Luton van. We have sheltered loading bays, trolleys to help you move your things and lifts to all floors. We’re open 7 days a week, so it’s easy to pop down and get anything you need – you don’t have to bring or remove it all at once.

Estimating how much space you need can be tricky

We can help you find the right room size, and you can swap easily if you find you’ve got too little, or too much, space. To fill your unit, start with the large, heavy items. If you can, upend furniture such as sofas to make use of the unit’s height and reduce the floor space they take up. Then pack smaller things around them. If there’s something you know you’ll need sooner rather than later, leave it until last and pack it by the door.

Our friendly store teams have helped hundreds of customers store their things when moving house, so they’ll be happy to help guide you through or answer any questions.

  • Sheltered loading bays

  • Access to trolleys

  • Lifts to all floors

  • Start with the larger and heavier items

  • Upend furniture (if possible) to make use ofthe unit’s height

  • Place the things you might need sooner closer to the door
